Out and About

What was originally an April’s Fool joke in 2004 is somewhat standing the test of time…as far as Styrofoam blocks go. This Mark Cline piece is on a bluff overlooking Highway 11, about 3 miles off Interstate 81. If only to say you’ve been there, you might want to hurry up before it goes. Judging from other images I’ve seen, all the blocks are deteriorating and it appears that some are missing. All the same, it is worth the hike up the hill just to get a sense of what... 

Natural Bridge Caverns are touted as the “deepest caverns on the East coast.” They might well be. We hiked the 134 steps down to the bottom…and then climbed them all the way back up. Actually, it seemed easier going up. At least, it didn’t seem as slippery. ... 

We spent a day or so riding up and down the Blue Ridge Mountains, from Orkney Springs down to Natural Bridge. It was very reminiscent of old travel holidays. I’d love to ride Route 11 completely some day, taking the time to experience the views and stops that made the journey more than a blast down the interstate. ...

Day or night, this is truly one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Not that there aren’t arches in other places, let alone other geographic wonders, but this is an amazing place. Today was the annual Texas Festival at Kenston Forest School in Blackstone. It’s been years since I’ve been able to make it down for this all-you-can-eat extravaganza. We’re talking tons of barbecue, ribs, chili, tacos and a non-stop open bar. Throw in live music and a bull ride and you’ve got one monster party! ...
